The greatest enemy of the human race is fear, says C Franklin Leavitt, MD. Many people diet and exercise to regain their health, he pointed out, “But fear alone has sickened them.”
Leavitt quotes psychologists, including William James, who believe that every thought and accompanying emotion causes physical changes in breathing, circulation, general muscular tension, and more even if we aren’t aware of it. Overcoming their fears, Leavitt insists, would help people lead happier and healthier lives.
Leavitt first published his theories in Self Mastery Through Understanding in 1913 (there were at least 19 editions after that).
And today WebMD tells us
